London borough: | Southwark |
Former address: | [street since renumbered] |
Historical parish: | Southwark St Olave |
Dates open: | existed in 1789 |
Notes: | In a 1789 Sun Fire Office insurance record the "Black Lion" is mentioned as being on the corner of Black Lion Court, which the 1799 Horwood map of London shows as running north off Tooley Street between 80 and 81 Tooley St, so this was probably at 81 Tooley St, on the opposite corner from the "Black Lion" which is mentioned on the corner of Morgans Lane (running off to the north between 79 and 80 Tooley St). Alternatively, of course, it may be an alternative or earlier name for the "Black Lion" or even for the "Royal Oak" (at 79 Tooley St, later renumbered as 113 Tooley St; see separate entry). |
