Notes: | This was attached to the "Surrey Theatre" (or "Surrey Vaudeville Theatre") upon rebuilding. It may have been renamed around that time, but there are Sun Fire Office insurance records going back to 1790 with the name as the "Equestrian Coffee House". It it suggested on the Pubs History site that the "Magdalen Coffee House" was on the site, but it is mentioned in a 1797 Sun Fire Office insurance record as being at the end of Dover Street (later Little Surrey Street, now Davidge Street), suggesting it was sited to the north, closer to the intersection with Friar Street (modern Webber Street), on the other side of the road, opposite the former site of the Magdalen Hospital (now Peabody dwellings). There are Sun Fire office records of a "Circus Coffee House" (between 1791-1801), which must have been either in the same building or very close by, as the site of the Surrey Theatre is shown as the "Royal Circus" on Horwood's 1799 map. |
